Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Services

Independent Domestic Violence Advocates

The UK government’s definition of domestic violence is ‘any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to psychological, physical, sexual, financial, emotional.’

Domestic abuse can take different forms and includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, coercive control, emotional abuse, digital or online abuse, honour-based violence, forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).

IDVA

An IDVA is an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate. IDVAs will support people through the criminal justice system and will advocate for them to make sure they get the support they need to move forward. You can find details of domestic violence and IDVA services in your area below.

Independent Sexual Violence Advocates

An ISVA is an Independent Sexual Violence Advocate and they will support victims of sexual violence. In South Yorkshire, support is available to people who have received unwanted sexual contact and the ISVA service provides practical support to help victims deal with the circumstances.

In order to receive support, there is an ISVA referral pathway in South Yorkshire and support is available for women, men, children and families regardless of whether you have spoken to the police or anyone else about the incident.

You can find more information about the ISVA service and how you can refer yourself or someone else to the service here
