Home security

Protecting your home

Burglary is one of the most common types of crime and can be one of the most devastating. CCTV can be expensive but there are other measures you can take to help keep your home secure.

Before you leave home:

  • Close and lock all windows and doors
  • Set your burglar alarm
  • Make sure the gates are locked
  • Lock your shed and garage
  • Put valuables out of sight
  • Put keys out of reach of letterboxes
  • In the evening shut curtains and leave lights on
  • Never leave documents or ID in obvious places
  • Leave a radio or television on if you can or use a TV simulator device

Tips to help keep your property safe:

  • Make front walls no more than 1 metre high
  • Make side and driveway gates the same height
  • Gravel driveways & paths make a silent approach difficult
  • Make sure doors and windows are secure
  • Have security lights thoughtfully positioned
  • Store wheelie bins or other potential climbing aids behind locked gates
  • Planting spiky climbing plants acts as an additional deterrent
